Balloon Mobile

I have produced US and UK versions of the patterns I deduced from this picture.

All the pictures on this page will enlarge for a closer look.

US Version

The original tension given was 9 scs and 9 rows to 2 inches using 4ply yarn and F hook.

I found I could get a similar size using DK yarn and a 4mm hook (US – Worsted weight, 6 hook (or betwen F & G according to my conversion chart)).

I do think that I may crochet tighter than some people.

See picture here with balloon and basket pictured against a ruler.

New balloon and basket

But I suggest you use a suitable size hook and yarn to make the balloons the size you want.

I used the same yarn and hook for all items.

Balloon

Make four of these in different colours.

Working always in a spiral. Mark first stitch of each row as you go.

Starting with the magic loop method.
Row 1:  1ch, then 6sc into loop.     (6sts)
Row 2: 2sc in each sc on previous row.     (12sts)
Row 3: Repeat (hdc into st, 2hdc into st) 6times.     (18sts)
Row 4: Repeat (hdc into each of next 2 sts, 2hdc into next st) 6 times.     (24sts)
Rows 5-8: hdc into each st.     (24sts)

Start adding stuffing from this point.

Row 9: Repeat (hdc into each of next 2sts, hdc2tog) 6 times.     (18sts)
Row 10: Repeat (hdc into next st, hdc2tog) 6 times.     (12sts)
Rows 11-13: sc into each st.      (12sts)
Row 14: sc2tog six times.     (6sts)

To finish: Thread yarn through sts and draw together.

Basket

Make one for each balloon in yellow yarn.

Starting with the magic loop method.
Row 1: 1ch, then 6sc into loop and join with a slst to first sc.      (6sts)
Row 2: 1ch, 2sc into each sc on previous round and join with a slst to first sc.     (12sts)
Row 3: 1ch, working into the back loop only sc into each stitch.     (12sts)
Rows 4-7: Continuing, working in a spiral, work 1sc into each stitch.     (12sts)

To finish: Slst to first stitch of previous row.

There are patterns given for a small and a large cloud so you can choose which you prefer.

Hanging circle

Make this in blue yarn.

The ring used in the original pattern is an eight inch one.

Chain a length a little longer than the circumference of the ring then work sc into first chain you made, making a circle, and then every subsequent chain.

Continue round and round for a few more rows of scs or more than enough to cover the ring.

Stitch start and finish together round the ring or work row of scs passing hook through stitches of previous row and loops below first row. This should give a gathered effect.

As always, if you find a mistake in the pattern please let me know. The number of stitches in each row I know is correct but there may be other mistakes.

UK Version

The original tension given was 9 dcs and 9 rows to 2 inches using 4ply yarn and 3.75mm hook which we don’t have in the UK.

I found I could get a similar size using DK yarn and a 4mm hook.

I do think that I may crochet tighter than some people.

See picture here with balloon and basket pictured against a ruler.

    1. Not sure quite what you want. When all the individual pieces are made. The basket is attached to the balloon with four pieces of thread (crochet cotton would work well or very fine string.) Then you need some strong thread or maybe something like fishing line to tie to the top of the ballon and thread and secure through a cloud then the ring for two of the baskets. Other two baskets without a cloud. Then more fishing line or fine cord (three or four pieces) could be used to attach the ring to a suspension point. All as in the picture.
